Devlog #1: Introducing Grabeaty

Who We Are:

Hello, everyone! We’re a group of three students from the Universidad de Chile, and we're developing a brand-new game called Grabeaty. But before diving into details of Grabeaty, let's introduce ourselves:

GAME NEXUS TEAM:

  • Jorge
    • Favourite Game: Rocket League
    • Favourite Food: Sushi
    • Hobby: Play videogames
  • Alonso
    • Favourite Game: EA FC24
    • Favourite Food:  Pizza
    • Hobby: Create videos and play videogames
  • Diego
    • Favourite Game: The Legend of Zelda franchise
    • Favourite Food: Pasta
    • Hobby: Reading and watching movies

From a brainstorming we decided to make Grabeaty, it was quite difficult because we had three options, an adventure game based on dimensional transportation, a multiplayer local fight game between two players and Grabeaty, but what is Grabeaty?

What We're Making:

Grabeaty is a fast-paced rhythm-based shooter set in a futuristic world. Imagine a game where you control a spaceship while simultaneously hitting notes to the beat of a song. Your ability to fire and upgrade your ship depends on how well you hit the notes, creating a unique mix of rhythm and shooting skills.

  • On the left side of the screen, you’ll be playing a rhythm game like Guitar Hero, pressing A, S, and D to hit the notes.
  • On the right side, your spaceship fights off waves of enemies while dodging their attacks. The better you do on the rhythm side, the more powerful your spaceship becomes, unlocking new weapons and abilities.

The main idea is that without successfully hitting notes, you won’t be able to defeat enemies, creating an interesting balance between the rhythm and shooter mechanics.

How We're Developing It:

We’re using Godot Engine to develop the game. Our focus right now is on building the core mechanics:

  • We have started with the rhythm gameplay, where notes fall from the top, and you hit the corresponding keys.

  • For the shooter side, we're developing movement and shooting mechanics for the spaceship, synced to the music for a more immersive experience.

We're also testing sprites, user interfaces, music (which is a key element of the game), and other assets.

One of the challenges we’re tackling is ensuring the rhythm gameplay syncs perfectly with the background music. We plan to experiment with procedural generation for note patterns based on the BPM of each song. Right now, we're also working on improving how notes are timed and detected to make the experience smooth and satisfying—especially as we prepare for our first demo. On the shooter side, we're implementing shooting logic, enemy and background design.

What's Next:

Our immediate focus is to polish the gameplay, ensuring that the notes and shooting mechanics feel tight and responsive. After that we`ll focus on developing the difficulty, whether it be different music patterns, different enemies and even the bonuses that can be obtained to increase the chances of winning. We’ll also expand the game’s song selection, including tracks from different BPM ranges, genres, and artists to keep the experience varied and exciting.

Stay Tuned:

Thanks for reading our first devlog! We’re super excited to continue developing Grabeaty and can’t wait to share more updates with you as we progress. Stay tuned for more insights into our development process, challenges, and upcoming features!
